As we mark International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024, under the theme ‘Inspire Inclusion,’ I’ve been drawn into deep reflection on my journey as a leader. It’s a journey punctuated by moments of doubt, leaps into the unknown, and the incredible power of unity and mentorship. This contemplation led me to reach out to my fellow female leaders, whose insights and shared experiences have enriched this blog post, intertwining their wisdom with my own path to leadership.
From Support Roles to Leading the Charge
My journey has been a testament to overcoming the narratives that often box women into supporting roles. Reflecting on my own experiences, I recognize times when fear held me back from embracing risk. Yet, it was the decision to step out of my comfort zone, leaving a longstanding career in the MICE sector to embrace digital marketing, that marked the beginning of a transformative phase in my career.
Transitioning from behind-the-scenes to a client-facing role, and later to leading an entire business unit and starting a new venture from scratch, were periods filled with discomfort and self-doubt. However, these were also the moments that defined my growth. They taught me the value of curiosity, spurred my drive for continuous learning, and helped me find the courage to lead through rapid changes and the constant need for innovation.
Finding My Tribe
A pivotal lesson on my leadership journey has been the importance of community. No leader can stand alone. The mentors who have guided me, colleagues for brainstorming, teammates who support unconditionally, and family and friends who uplift during the toughest times, have all been my pillars. Their trust and support have been instrumental in every step forward I’ve taken.
Serving to Lead
Leadership, to me, has evolved to mean service. The realization that there are individuals who depend on my guidance and look to me for direction underpins the essence of true leadership. I lead not for personal accolades but to uplift, support, and empower those around me. The responsibility towards my team and the joy when they find success is what makes leadership a profoundly rewarding journey.
Key Insights from Our Collective Leadership Experience
In reaching out to my network, their shared stories echoed themes of resilience, empowerment, and the critical need for diversity and inclusion. Here are distilled insights that resonate with my journey and, which I believe, will inspire other aspiring leaders striving to create more inclusive and supportive spaces:
- Advocacy and Persistence: Our journeys emphasize the power of standing up for ourselves and others, challenging the narratives that constrain us, and initiating crucial conversations for recognition and change.
- Empathy and Assertiveness: Balancing assertiveness with empathy has been vital. This duality enables us to establish credibility and foster enjoyable work relationships, while also challenging stereotypes that label female leaders as too emotional or aggressive.
- Mentorship and Community: Building a supportive network of mentors, colleagues, and allies has been indispensable. These relationships provide not only growth opportunities but also the strength to navigate and overcome challenges.
- Adaptability and Continuous Learning: The constant pursuit of knowledge and openness to change have been our anchors in an ever-evolving professional landscape. This adaptability is crucial in fostering both individual and team growth.
- Authentic Leadership and Leading by Example: Authentic leadership attracts like-minded individuals. It celebrates successes and fosters team growth. By being authentic and vocal about our values, leading with our actions, we inspire change and empower others to contribute and create a more inclusive environment.
- Flexibility and Inclusion in Policy-Making: Implementing trust-based policies and encouraging inclusive decision-making enhance team dynamics and creates a sense of belonging. From offering flexibility working arrangements to empowering teams with autonomy and responsibility, we’ve seen firsthand how such practices bolster support and productivity.
Our Path Forward
As we forge ahead, it’s clear that leadership is a tapestry woven from threads of resilience, empathy, and unwavering support for one another. It’s about embracing our individual journeys, with all their discomforts and triumphs, and recognizing the collective power we hold to inspire and enact change.
So, as I reflect on the growth and learning that have defined my leadership journey, and as I consider the sage advice of my peers, I am reminded that we are all architects of a more inclusive and equitable future. Our leadership is not just about the positions we hold but the impact we make—championing diversity, fostering genuine connections, and creating spaces where everyone has a voice, feels valued and is empowered to thrive.
This IWD, let’s commit to continuing our journey with grit and grace, embracing the challenges ahead as opportunities for growth and transformation. Together, we can inspire inclusion and shape a world where every leader, regardless of gender, can rise and flourish.
